WATCH: Sunil Chhetri’s volley goal against Kuwait makes him all-time record SAFF Championships scorer

Indian men’s football team captain Sunil Chhetri broke another record as India played a 1-1 draw against Kuwait in their Group A SAFF Championships fixture on Tuesday at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium in Bangalore.

With India having won a corner in the stoppage time of the first half, Chhetri would connect the incoming delivery from the right first time, a sweet volley that beat the keeper to his right to give India a 1-0 lead.

The goal marked Chhetri’s fifth in the competition this year and his 24th overall in the SAFF Championships, a new record. Chhetri surpassed Maldives’ Ali Ashfaq to rise to the top of the goals tally in the competition.

India came into Tuesday’s contest on the back of 4-0 and 2-0 wins against Pakistan and Nepal respectively. While Chhetri had scored a hat-trick against Pakistan, he was one of the two scorers for India against Nepal.

With the draw against Kuwait, India finished Group A second behind the latter. In Group B, Lebanon lead the points tally after matchday two with six points, while Bangladesh sit second with three points.
