‘Don’t want to be a bone of contention’: Najam Sethi pulls out of race to be PCB chairman

Najam Sethi, the interim chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), announced on Tuesday that he will not be seeking a permanent position after pulling out of the race to become the next board chairman.

Sethi made the announcement in a statement on Twitter, saying that he was stepping down in order beacuse he did not want to be a bone of contention between Asif Zardari and Shehbaz Sharif.

“Salaam everyone! I don’t want to be a bone of contention between Asif Zardari and Shehbaz Sharif. Such instability and uncertainty is not good for PCB. Under the circumstances I am not a candidate for Chairmanship of PCB. Good luck to all stakeholders,” he tweeted.

Earlier this month, Pakistan Federal Minister Ehsan Mazari had said Zaka Ashraf would be the next PCB chairman.

Mazari said that Sethi was appointed for four months to conduct elections for the PCB chairman. His tenure is set to end on June 21.

Sethi’s decision to step down as interim chairman is a significant development for the PCB.

Sethi has been interim chairman of the PCB since December 2022, when he was appointed by the board’s governing body, the Board of Governors (BoG). He took over after the previous chairman, Ramiz Raja, resigned following a disagreement with the BoG over the future of the Pakistan Super League (PSL).
